Context

The energy landscape is fundamentally transforming.

The increasing development of renewable energy, decentralized production and the electrification of energy consumption, such as electric cars and heat pumps, are a big challenge for the overall system and its players. With the energy transition and the digitalization of the sector underway, consumers are calling for energy services that deliver more value and comfort.

This consumer wants and will be led to play an increasingly active role in the functioning of the electrical system.

Flexity aims to investigate the flexibility potential on the household level and test how it can be operated and valorized in the market.

MORE ON FLEXITY 1.0

Objectives tested during the demonstration phase

1 | Demonstrate the capability of a fleet of low-voltage assets to participate in the aFRR (and mFRR) balancing product.

2 | Assess the data exchange and metering quality requirements for participation, incl. the impact on local congestion management for the DSOs.

3 | Prepare for the capacity tariff for residential households located in Flanders.

Approach followed during the demonstration project

Flexity 2.0 is an open demonstration project part of the IoE ecosystem in which system operators join forces with flexibility service providers to demonstrate the participation of low-voltage flexibility in the balancing market (both aFRR and mFRR).

The diagram shows the respective roles and responsibilities of each player in the IO.Flexity 2.0 project.

The flexibility service provider (FSP) optimizes the smart appliances in the house or in the public space and valorizes the flexibility in the balancing market, while keeping comfort guaranteed at all time. The user allows the FSP to steer its appliances and receives value from it in return (e.g. more efficient control of the appliances, energy savings and/or reduction of the energy bill). Finally, the system operators investigate the reliability and authenticity of both individual and aggregated data that will be used in the settlement process (activation controls…).

Overall, they participate to a more resilient, sustainable and flexible energy landscape!
