The third edition of IO.E has been launched to build an internet of energy that aims to boost the energy transition in village streets.

The energy transition is imminent; the way in which we consume and produce energy is changing. At the same time, the energy transition still has a long way to go in terms of awareness of the opportunities, added value and financial benefits for the citizens. Citizens are stressed because they are unsure of how their energy costs will evolve and are looking for answers to get their expenses under control. No easy task, especially when one realizes that a large group of people are unable to become producers of local energy. IO.E wants to empower today’s citizens in accelerating the energy transition so that they can adapt to the increasing variability of a world powered by renewable energy sources.

To make this work, we need new digital tools, new rules, platforms, automation, etc. to discover the added value and benefits of active steering. All this has to be combined with real-time communication capabilities that connect all electrical devices and the various players in the system. In addition, citizens need to participate and be informed of the possibilities. The solution should be brought to your home so that energy efficiency can be maximized. It is in this latter context that V3.0 emerged.

Based on the success of the first and second editions, technological innovations were co-created within an ecosystem of pioneering energy partners. In this respect, IO.Energy 3.0 will maintain the continuity of the previous editions – sandbox phase, test environment – , but with a clear social orientation towards collaboration and co-implementation together with the community and the citizens to face the challenges of the future.

Let’s boost the energy transition together!

Citizen Challenge

  • Empower citizens to optimize their energy-usage & energy-cost
  • Solutions touch all layers of society – inclusive

System Challenge

  • Propose, design, build and test solutions with an impact on the energy infrastructure system as a whole
  • Improve interconnection of assets and nodes of the system (grid); generation, load, distribution, storage, meters, customer owned assets

The participants must help build and develop the IO.Energy Ecosystem, which means that openness is required during co-creation and development with other-use cases/citizens.

2 | Support

The IO.E Ecosystem will be supported by:

  • IO.Energy Board, composed by system operators;
  • Expert Board, composed of specialized experts in IO.E and specialized experts of upscaling to stimulate the industrialization of use-cases for a tangible impact on the energy transition;
  • Ecosystem Execution Team, to ensure day to day operations.

The support is designed to foster and promote open innovation within the ecosystem.

3 | Use case partnership arrangements

The agreements to be made between the use case participants on the purpose, scope and timing of collaboration, contributions, ownership of intellectual property and exit arrangements, are the responsibility of the use case participants itself. (f.ex. MoU)

Use cases and coalitions should appoint a project/scrum leader to guide the project on a scrum-of-scrum.
