Worldwide, we see major trends affecting our societies. The 3 D’s, Digitalization, Decarbonization and Decentralization will shape our future. Besides these key trends, consumers are more and more concerned about their comfort, personal data and willing to be empowered.

As a consequence, societies will be required to lower their carbon emissions by 80% in 2050. More renewable energy sources are developed, which, due to their inherent intermittent character, will require a more flexible electrical system.

On the other hand, there is a huge potential for energy efficiency with buildings. According to some sources between 40 and 60% of energy is consumed by large buildings. Nevertheless, business owners are more concerned about the comfort and productivity of their employees than of the efficiency. This has a larger impact on their day-to-day operations and profits.

The current evolution in technology will be key in the successful evolution of our economies in the energy transition. Smart buildings, and in a larger perspective, smart cities are already being developed to ensure advanced comfort and efficiency. However, the contribution of these smart buildings to the system and market needs is stil at its embryo stage.

Enleash forms the missing link between the needs of the market and electrical system for flexibility, and the needs of the business/building owners by guaranteeing comfort levels and lowering energy consumption for the business owners while valorizing the resulting flexibility on the energy market via the IO.E. The aim is to put the energy-related information of the building at the disposal of the market and system in an agnostic-usage approach.

It all starts with the building itself. Enleash collects all the relevant energy data from the physical asset, aggregate it and put it on a central location. It can then be combined with forecasts of energy market prices, weather forecasts and other types of external data to make very accurate forecasts of the energy consumption pattern by the building.

By exposing this information to the IO.E platform as well as to different market parties, Enleash can create value for both the asset owners as the market parties. It provides flexibility to the grid when necessary – within certain comfort limits.

The building will expose its information and respond through commands from market and system, by the means of Application Program Interface (API), to to requests coming from outside of the building. The response of the building is optimized under the comfort constraint of the building occupants.

The use case will consist in assessing the technical set-up and integration, as well as testing the exposure of information and response to commands from market and system.

1 | The business owner wins

The building owners can valorize the energy potential hidden in their building while they simultaneously improve employee satisfaction. This also provides him with monetary gains.

2 | The system operator wins

It gets a new source of unconstrained flexibility which is key to ensure the energy transition and reducing carbon emissions.

3 | The building user wins

Comfort levels within the building can be optimized by putting the collected data at work. It allows employees to be happier and more productive.

4 | The planet wins

Relevant energy data can be used to lower the overall energy consumption level of buildings for a more sustainable, better world.

During the sandboxing phase, Enleash will create its first Proof Of Concept (POC).

These results will inform the business potential that can be achieved and how the solution can be scaled in a later phase.

BESIX Group has over the years grown into a multidisciplinary company with a leading position in its markets: construction, property development, and concessions. As experts in complex construction projects, BESIX is used to interact with clients, has a good insight into customer needs and is able to implement Enleash in various types of real estate.

byNubian delivers products and solutions to integrate all building devices (KNX, Modbus, BACnet, LoRaWan,…), that allow analyzing their behaviour. It enables the building owner to transform the energy of the building and operational data into real value, both ecological and financial, thus creating a true Building Internet of Your Things.

Elia is the Transmission System Operator of Belgium.

Fluvius is a flemish DSO (distribution system operator).

Proximus’ purpose is to open up a world of digital opportunities so people live better and work smarter. Proximus is investing in future-proof networks and innovative solutions, creating the foundations for sustainable growth.By providing the necessary connectivity within the building and enabling platforms, they allow Enleash to gather the information needed to feed the algorithms.
